Hi kids! I’d like to talk to you about recycling and what you can do to help the environment. First, here are some words you need to know:

Waste

We throw away a lot of things every day...soda bottles, paper, milk jugs, etc. Once we’ve thrown those things away, we call them "waste."

Environment

How we get rid of waste affects our environment, YOUR environment, which is everything that surrounds you—the air, water, land, plants and animals. You need a healthy environment in order to be healthy.

Recycling

When you save things that can be remade into something else (instead of tossing them in the trash) and take them to a place that sorts the items so that they can be made into new items, that’s called recycling. For example, if you take your soda bottles to a convenience center, the bottles will be sorted with all the other recyclable items that have been brought in and then recycled into a comb, a shirt or even another bottle!

Convenience center

This is a place for you to take recyclable items. There are different sections for you to put glass bottles, plastic bottles, paper, aluminum cans and more.

Landfill

This is where all our waste goes when it’s not recycled. A landfill is a hole in a large, outdoor area that is filled with waste and then covered with a layer of soil. Special things are done to keep the waste from polluting our soil and water. As the amount of garbage increases, however, the amount of space in the landfill decreases.

You can help the environment and keep recyclable waste out of the landfill by recycling. Instead of throwing something away, recycle it! You can recycle paper (like your notebook paper from school, newspapers, magazines, etc.), aluminum cans, water bottles, soda bottles, cardboard boxes and more.
