Frequently Asked Questions
| Q: |
What type of bags should I put my recyclables in? |
| A: |
In order for your recyclables to be picked up on your neighborhood’s curbside pickup day,
the bags in which you place them must be blue or clear.
The bags may be any size and can be purchased at most local grocery stores,
pharmacies and discount department stores.
The blue plastic bags in which your groceries are placed at area grocery
stores are also acceptable for curbside recyclables.
You may also place your recyclables in a covered bin. [Top]
|
| Q: |
Are the bags in which I place my curbside recyclables recycled? |
| A: |
No. Even though these bags serve as adequate receptacles for curbside recyclables, they are not
recyclable through curbside collection or at convenience centers. Please contact your local
grocery store or discount department store to see if they have a recycling program for
plastic bags. [Top]

| Q: |
How should I prepare my recyclables for curbside pickup? |
| A: |
In order for curbside recyclables to be processed by the Recycling Center, the materials must
be in blue or clear bags or in a covered bin, such as a trash can. Steel cans are the only recyclable items that need
to be washed out. Your paper and plastic recyclables do not need to be separated and may be placed
in the same bag. Aluminum cans do not need to be crushed and the tabs do not need to be removed.

| Q: |
What is the difference between recycling at a convenience center and recycling curbside? |
| A: |
You can recycle aluminum cans, cardboard, newspaper,
all paper grades (except shredded), #1 and #2 plastic bottles with a neck and steel
cans that have been washed out when you recycle curbside.
Convenience centers offer additional recycling capabilities.
At a convenience center, you can recycle all the items you recycle
curbside plus shredded paper, glass bottles (brown, green, clear),
computers, small electronics, wet cell batteries and motor oil. [Top]

| Q: |
How should I bring my recyclables to a convenience center? |
| A: |
It does not matter how you bring your recyclable items to the convenience centers,
just remember that plastic bags are not recyclable.
There are plenty of trashcans at the convenience centers and you may
throw your bags away after you finish sorting your recyclables.
If you bring your recyclables in a paper bag or cardboard box, however,
you may recycle those items at the convenience center. [Top]
|
| Q: |
What glass items can I recycle? |
| A: |
Brown, green and clear glass bottles with a neck are the only glass items that are recyclable.
The Recycling Center does not accept windows or any other glass items. Glass bottles are only
recyclable at convenience centers and cannot be collected through the curbside program. [Top]
|
| Q: |
Why can't I recycle glass curbside? |
| A: |
Your recyclables
are sorted by the clients at Orange Grove: human hands.
Glass bottles break easily in curbside collection and tiny
shards of glass get mixed in with plastic and paper
recyclables, which could injure one of the clients sorting
your items. All glass bottles (green, brown, clear) must
be taken to a convenience center in order to be recycled.[Top]
|
| Q: |
Do I need to remove labels from my steel cans? |
| A: |
No.
You may leave them on. Please just rinse out the food
residue. Remember, your recyclables are sorted by human
hands-after food residue is rinsed out, please place the
lids inside the can so that the clients from Orange Grove
do not get cut accidentally from the sharp edges. [Top] |
